EVENTS

  • With resentment toward Europeans at an all time high, Chinese triads reach their peak numbering over 3,600 although many of the groups were limited to local villages or clans.

  • Early Cantonese criminals, of which will eventually form the first of the New York Tongs, soon begin arriving to the city resulting from the success of Cantonese gambler Wah Kee , who had been operatng illegal gambling parlors and Opium dens since the 1870s , in the New York district of what will later be known as Chinatown . The Chinese population steadily begins to climb to several hundred, compared to only 12 as of 1872, as the predominantly German and smaller Irish population slowly become driven out of the neighborhoods of Doyers , Mott , and Pell Street s as a result of the large immigration of Chinese immigrants which by 1910 will number more then 10,000.

  • June 26 - Joe Byrne shoots dead Aaron Sherritt for giving the police information about the Kelly Gang in exchange for money.

  • June 28 - Australian Bushrangers , Ned Kelly , Dan Kelly , Joe Byrne and Steve Hart (collectively known as the Kelly Gang) board themselves up in the Glenrowan Hotal only to be surrounded by 34 police officers. During the exchanging of gun fire Joe Byrne sustains several gunwounds and bleeds to death. Dan Kelly and Steve Hart commit Suicide during the stand off. Sometime during the event Ned Kelly, thinking adequate the armour he and Joe Byrne had created, emerges from the Hotel firing at the police and receives several injuries to his unprotected legs and arms. He is then captured and taken away for sentencing.

  • November 11 - Bushranger , Ned Kelly , Hanged at the Melbourne Gaol .

  • November 23 - 12 days after the hanging of Ned Kelly, Judge Redmond Barry who sentenced Kelly to death, falls ill and dies.
