  • June 14 - Atlantic Of Brooklyn defeats the Cincinnati Red Stockings 8 to 7 in 11 innings, breaking the Red Stockings' 89-game winning streak dating back to 1868. The score is tied 5-5 after nine innings, and the Atlantic team is happy to call a draw. However, Cincinnati manager Harry Wright insists upon playing to a decision. After a tense 10th inning, the Red Stockings score two runs in the 11th to take a 7 to 5 lead. The Brooklyn team comes back to score three runs in the bottom of the 11th, and all Brooklyn becomes delerious with joy.

Upon returning to his hotel room and composing himself, team president Aaron Champion sends a telegram back to the Cincinnati Commercial with the message, "ATLANTIC 8 CINCINNATI 7 STOP FINEST GAME EVER PLAYED STOP OUR BOYS DID NOBLY BUT FORTUNE WAS AGAINST US STOP THOUGH BEATEN NOT DISGRACED STOP"
