  • Jan Wintervogel, a Dutch ensign, is sent by Jan Van Riebeeck to scout the interior and goes as far as Saldanha Bay

  • Willem Muller, a Dutch corporal, is sent by Van Riebeeck with the Khoikhoi interpreter, Autsumao, to explore the Hottentots Holland region

  • Maize and Grape Vines are planted in the Cape

  • Catharina Anthonis, becomes the first Slave to be freed to marry Jan Woutersz, a Dutch settler

  • A Portuguese slaver is captured and 174 slaves are taken

  • May - 228 slaves from Dahomey are brought to the Cape aboard the "Hasselt" in a secret expedition. About 80 are shipped to Batavia

  • 2 February - The first wine is pressed from Cape grapes

  • 1 May - Jan Van Riebeeck establishes the Burgher Militia
