149th Street–Grand Concourse is a Subway Station in the Bronx , New York City , United States . The lower level of the station, which was originally known as Mott Avenue, was opened on July 10 , 1905 . It was the first subway station to be opened in the Bronx. The station was designed with a high rounded ceiling similar to 168th Street on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line , as well as elevators (now closed) and a pedestrian bridge between the 2 platforms (also closed). It has two side platforms. Nearly all of the original Mosaic Mott Avenue name tablets have all been covered over with metal "149 St–Grand Concourse" signs. Only one name tablet, located on the downtown platform between the last two staircases at the northern end, remains uncovered and survived intact until a few years into the 21st century when a serious water leak after very heavy rainfall caused individual tiles to separate from the wall and fall off. There are no plans by the MTA to repair or restore this name tablet. This station is served by the 2 Line and 5 Line . The upper level station was built as part of the Dual Contracts and was opened on July 17 , 1918 , to serve the newly built IRT Jerome Avenue Line . This construction also included track connections to the lower level station. |
