From 1963 onwards, the race counted towards the World Sportscar Championship , held for 500km in the first years though. Since 1966, it runs for 1000km, like the 1000km Nürburgring and 1000km Monza . As on the Nürburgring , also an 24h race is held, the Spa 24 Hours . Due to safety problems on the long 14km track, the race was shortened to 762km in 1974 and discontinued after 1975. In 1989 and 1990, the race was shortended to 480km for the new Formula One -derived engines, and then discontinued due to the decline of the WSC. In 2003, the 1000km were resumed, since 2004 as a part of the Le Mans Endurance Series (LMES), the Euro version of the American Le Mans Series ( ALMS ).
