Information About(don't Go Back To) Rockville |
"(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" was the second and final single released by R.E.M. from their second studio album '' Reckoning ''. The song failed to chart on either the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles Charts . The song was written by Mike Mills as a plea to his then girlfriend, Ingrid Schorr, not to return to her hometown of Rockville, Maryland . Originally played live at a fast pace, the band slowed it down and added a piano part as a joke for their Country Music loving Lawyer , Bertis Downs . The result was striking, and was deemed worthy of inclusion on the album. Unlike the songs written by Michael Stipe on ''Reckoning'', the song is more direct in its lyrics and the meaning less ambiguous and mysterious. Additionally, the song received some airplay on country music radio stations. The band have remained fond of the song, and in recent performances Mike Mills has taken lead vocals instead of Michael Stipe. A live version of the song was released as the B-side to Leaving New York in 2004 .
